Ancient basque legends say that there was a secret summoning which allowed witches to rise into the air to fly towards the Sabbath... and if they didn't say the words in the right order, could also have serious consequences during the flight!
This mysterious summoning in euskera, would be the following:
"LAINO GUZTIEN AZPITIK, SASI GUZTIEN GAINETIK!"
(*Below all clouds, above all brambles!)
Before saying this spell, the sorginak (witches in euskera) would first anoint themselves with a flying ointment that were compounded of such highly poisonous plants as the mandragora autumnalis, hyoscyamus niger, datura stramonium, atropa belladonna, aconitum... amongst other crucial ingredients to ride to the Sabbath.
Other popular legends say that witches also applied this magical ointments on her broomsticks, in order to be absorbed best through the mucous membranes; for this reason, the broom was also seen as a phallic symbol of sexuality and fertility.
In short, the flight is the most popular of the witch's powers, but is also a metaphor of the absolute freedom of women; in this regard, the broom, that would be traditionally considered as a mere domestic tool very much related to female oppression, becomes into a real instrument of liberation with which to fly away and to experience new realities.
Inspired by these mysterious legends, I've designed this simple emblem related to the arcane witches' flight. Have a nice flight!

Las antiguas leyendas vascas cuentan que existía una invocación secreta que permitía a las brujas elevarse en el aire para volar hacia el aquelarre ... ¡pero si no decían las palabras en el orden correcto, esto podría ocasionar graves consecuencias durante el vuelo!
Esta misteriosa invocación en euskera, sería la siguiente:
"¡LAINO GUZTIEN AZPITIK, SASI GUZTIEN GAINETIK!"
(*¡Por debajo de todas las nubes, por encima de todas las zarzas!)
Antes de pronunciar este hechizo, las sorginak (brujas en euskera) ungían primero sus cuerpos con un ungüento volador compuesto de plantas altamente venenosas como la mandragora autumnalis, hyoscyamus niger, datura stramonium, atropa belladonna, aconitum... entre otros ingredientes cruciales para cabalgar hacia el aquelarre.
Otras leyendas populares aseguran que las brujas también aplicaban estos ungüentos mágicos en el palo de sus escobas, con el fin de ser absorbidos mejor a través de las membranas mucosas; por esta razón, la escoba también ha sido vista como símbolo fálico de sexualidad y fertilidad.
En resumen, el vuelo es el más popular de los poderes de la bruja, pero también es una metáfora de la libertad absoluta de las mujeres; en este sentido, la escoba, considerada tradicionalmente como un mero utensilio doméstico muy relacionado con la opresión femenina, se convierte en un verdadero instrumento de liberación con el que volar lejos y experimentar nuevas realidades.
Inspirada por estas misteriosas leyendas, he diseñado este sencillo emblema relacionado con el vuelo arcano de las brujas. ¡Que tengáis un feliz vuelo!
